P90X alternative…. Great bar great price, but…..
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I read other reviews stating that this was a great alternative to the much more expensive P90X bar. They are all true, this bar seems really sturdy, is easy to put together (be careful and separate the different types of bolts so you don’t come up short at the end), well made and CHEAP compared to the other one. HOWEVER…. I have slight molding on my doors and this bar WILL NOT work on them safely. Am so bummed. The molding above my doors is not thick at all… no more than a half inch at thickest point…. but it is about 8 inches tall.
As such, I can’t use this great product and will have to send it back or sell it on. Am so bummed! Am in the middle of p90x first month and have had to skimp on my workouts – can’t do shoulders and arms! They show you a “modification” in the video using bands, but the bands have to be secured to something very sturdy way above your head. Like, I don’t know… a chin up bar.
In looking at the official P90X bar, it looks like it would have the same problem.
Anyway… would be a great product if I could use it. FYI, my house is a 1920/1930’s style cape. All original woodwork on the doors, if that is informative to any homeowners loooking at this review.
Good luck and happy fitness!

Living in an apartment I bought this instead of a regular pull up bar so as to not have to drill into and then later patch the drywall. Unfortunately, after putting the bar together there were two problems. First, I didn’t realize that of the four doors I have in my place none of them had enough clearance on both sides for the bar to fit “perfectly”. (I’d seen other posts that mention a problem with their moldings, but that was not a problem here.) Second, on the one door that it did kind of fit one side would not lay flat and kept popping off the top molding/frame. Thinking the door was not completely plumb I switched it to the other side of the door, but still the same end stuck out which didn’t make sense. I then though maybe it needed to be put together in a certain way, so I took it apart switching the bar on the left for the bar on the right. While doing this I noticed it was the bar itself was made badly. The screw holes were misaligned by approx. 3/4″! Since it didn’t really fit anyway I returned it to the company who, when I explained the problem, didn’t seem the least bit interested that there might be a production problem. I can only suspect if you get one made correctly and have the correct door width with the correct molding AND with enough room on either side of it, you’ll love this product.
Measure Thy Door Frames

This is a great pushup bar. You can easily and comfortably do regular, military (close grip), and wide grip pushups, and of course any variation of those. The raised and curved middle bars allow a very comfortable position during regular pushups, mitigating the stress on your wrists. I am only giving this product 4/5 stars, because it did not fit my door frame. I probably should have checked beforehand, but it would have been nice for the packaging or advertising to recommend that one do this before purchasing the product. I’m sure it’s probably a good pullup bar, but I can’t really comment, since I neglected to measure my frames. Assembly took no more than 15-20 minutes. It’s very straightforward and doesn’t require any extra tools; in the box they provide a small tool to tighten the bolts, etc. I have had mine now for about a month and a half, and it looks like it did the day I bought it. I use it weekly in P90X. I highly recommend both the product and measuring your door frames.

Excellent product! Multiple grips allow for a wide range of pull-ups to vary your exercise routine. Fits securely over every door i have used it on, so i feel stable in doing my p90x workouts with the bar.
Great product.

I am deployed right now and this has been the best thing to pass time. It works perfect in the doorway. We have people from 150 pounds to about 250 and we have had no problems with it. The wide grip is the only way to go. I would never get the regular Iron Gym. this has been a great purchase.
Great Buy for Home Workouts

Easy to set up. Compact for when travelling and storage. Sturdy. Does not appear to damage door frame after ~2 months of frequent use. Great for working multiple upper-body and core muscle groups. Comfortable grips. The straps do not actually come with the bar. You have to send away for them after purchasing the bar. They are free, but you still have to pay for shipping and handling.
Check all measurements of door frame & moulding before purchasing!

I live in an older home (plantation style) with smaller doors and wider door mouldings, and this product does not work with the dimensions. I will keep anyways, just cause it’s a hassle to send back + lose out on all ship fees, but just beware before buying.

Works as advertised. Just make sure you have a sturdy frame for your safety and the door. There is minor assembly needed but the package comes with all tools needed. It should only take 5-10 minutes to get it set up.
Perfect formula: Strong, sturdy, comprehensive and inexpensive

Like many of the respondents, I looked around at a number of different pull-up bar options before purchasing the Iron Gym Extreme. I really had two major questions in my mind:
1) Should I get a basic bar, or a more complex (Extreme) bar? The simple answer is to ask yourself what you will be doing with it. The Extreme bar is the same quality, and has many of the same features, as the basic bar, with one important difference: grip variety. Not only does the Extreme version have additional, wider tri handles, but it also has wide lat handles, which I would argue give the best workout. Plus, the bar places you farther away from the door for some of the exercises, which helps for comfort and range of motion. If those are not important, I see no reason to not buy a basic model, but for the relatively small additional cost, I think you get more options, and better fitness benefit.
2)Should I get this, or a more expensive bar? I can’t attest to the other bars out there. I wanted to do P90X with it, and, well, they have their own bar. Is it any lighter, stronger, or more durable? Who knows, but the Iron Gym Extreme is well built and does everything I need it to do for much less cost. For all intents and purposes the two (and others) have the same look, feel and features, so unless there is compelling reason, why pay more? Like a lot of things in life, it’s nice to have “matching” items, but with this, there is no need. Use the extra cash to go buy some more protein shakes or something.
With the decision made, here are my general comments on the bar:
1) Assembly: Pretty easy. It came fully wrapped for protection, and all of the pieces fit together perfectly. The manual was essentially a diagram, but it was easy to follow. It even came with a little spanner tool to tighten the nuts and bolts, although I would probably recommend a proper tool to tighten it fully.
2) Build/contruction: Very good. Lightweight steel with a high quality painted grey finish. The nuts, bolts and washers are a bit lighter than I would have expected, but they appear to be strong enough for the job.
3) Set-up: Really easy. There is a small metal door wedge that slides between the wall and trim to keep the bar on the top of the door frame. While the wedge doesn’t appear capable of resisting much force when applied, it doesn’t need to, as it firmly does its job of keeping the bar on the frame.
4) Grips: Standard foam, but quite comfortable.
5) Weigh-bearing/noise: I am about 175lbs, and the whole bar feels really sturdy under my weight. There is no visible flexing of the bar when in use, and the only noise is from the slight rubbing of the foam pads against the frame when initially bearing the weight on the bar due to initial flexing. It is not at all concerning to me (it’s simply physics), and there appears to be no strain on the door frame, wall or joists.
6) Frame padding/marking: Some respondents seem to get scuff marks on their frames and walls, some do not. Personally, I have not seen any with a few weeks of use, but I expect that when the foam breaks down a bit with the friction that I may see some in the future. However, tape a piece of paper to the frame and you have solved the problem.
7) Other uses: I’m not about to do dips with it, but the handles are very useful for push-ups (similar to push-up handles, which cause less wrist strain and give a better range of motion), and I could see the benefit for securing the feet for sit-ups.
With that being said, here are some of the reasons I did not give it a full 5 stars:
1) The ab straps are not included. I knew this going in, and they are “free” with mail-in insert (can’t order online, which is odd), but at $8 for shipping, you might as well buy from the store at $10 and get them instantly. Honestly, they should just be included in the packaging.
2) The bar is designed for a maximum 32″ doorway. At 34″, it will still straddle the doorway with about 1″ overlap on each side of the frame, but I wouldn’t want to try using it. Again, I knew this going in, and I found another doorway that worked, but the extender bar is $10, plus $8 shipping. Really? Couldn’t it come with a longer bar to begin with? Most wheelchair accessible doors are 34″, and therefore the bar won’t really work with that door width right out of the box.
3) No wall chart or DVD (without paying more money to Iron Gym and waiting for the mail). Personally, I don’t need them, but for those without much experience, I feel it’s important to be taught correct technique and variety of exercise. For pennies per package, Iron Gym could have provided a great deal more product.
So, full marks for performance and “bang for the buck.” If Iron Gym weren’t so cheap on the accessories and modifications, it would be the perfect package. Most importantly, I am seeing results, and I was in very good shape to begin with. Unlike a lot of equipment that gets used for a while, then collects dust and eventually ends up in a garage sale or in the dump, I believe this bar will have a good useful life with most people.

Iron Gym Total Upper Body Workout Bar – Extreme Edition
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The Iron Gym Total Upper Body Workout Bar – Extreme Edition is a great piece of home workout equipment. If you pair this with some push up equipment and do some hindu squats, you can workout your entire body rather thoroughly. If you assemble the equipment properly, it is a very sturdy and works well in most door frames.
good product

probably a hair overpriced for the construction but it easily handles my 180lbs 6ft frame. If anything my door jam squeeks a little when I use it but otherwise its great…. have been feeling better, can notice a bit more strength in my arms and back after two weeks of light use and my back generally feels much better (I slouch a lot so I started to get some back pain…. its now gone, and I do feel more energetic)…. overall, a great investement…. only pain in the @#%% thing about it is that you need to take it off if you need to close the door… oh well, can’t have it all =)
Works well but leaves marks

I bought this a few months ago and it has been working fine for me. Very stable and I weigh about 200 pounds doing sets of 15 pull ups. The problem I have with this is that it leaves black stains on my white door frame. Also, there are cracks in the paint where the two supports make contact. I considered putting a small towel or something in between to protect the door frame, but was afraid it would then become unstable.
Does what it says

Good product. Fits perfectly although your mileage may vary. Great for a quick workout on days when you can’t quite get to the gym
