The U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition

As a personal trainer looking for ways to challenge my clients I thought this book would be helpful but I was incorrect. It’s a ‘dumb-down’ tutorial – I found more fascinating things online.

Fascinating program to ensure getting seriously overtrained in a very small period of time. No wonder those military guys are so grumpy and quarrelsome. If you have internet access and google (shhhhh!) you can find this book for free online… For normal people who aren’t genetic superstars or on steroids I would highly suggest checking out Stuart McRobert’s “Beyond Brawn” instead.

This book is in a very simple to follow format. The first part of the book focuses on physical fitness. This section not only clarifies the workouts, but also how to reach your goals with these workouts. The second part focuses on nutrition. Technical terms are used, but enough explanation is given. If you understood high school biology, you should have no problems following along. The nutrition section is very realistic. Most nutrition guides only tell you to eat heathy. This book gives you the nutritional value of snacks that are not the most healthy and clarifies how to burn it off. There are some chapters that are SEAL-specific, like mission preparation. These chapters may not apply to everyone, but they do make excellent reading.

I just wanted to comment on the formatting of the Kindle edition of this book. It is done very well. I have bought many Kindle books that contained charts or tables that were very hard to read.
The formatting of this book was designed specifically for the larger DX Kindle. But I’m currently using the Kindle app for the iPhone (as I gave my regular Kindle to my son to take with him to Iraq), and it looks fantastic.

I found that a lot of the information in this book was stuff that I already knew, even though I don’t have any real formal education in sports and fitness. The stuff on nutrition is basically what you probably already know from your high school biology class, although there are a few excellent tips that I hadn’t heard before. As for the weightlifting and calisthenics, most of it I already knew, although there were one or two exercises I hadn’t seen before. If you already work out and eat right on a regular basis you probably don’t need this book, but if you’re really clueless when it comes to exercise and nutrition then this book is a excellent value for you.
