I’ve used this for 2 of my children and it was a fantastic starting spelling book. It gave them the confidence they needed to excel. It was just the right level for any early emergent reader. The book is brightly colored and fun. It works well with the MCP phonics, which is one of my favorite phonic programs. I have home-schooled for 12 years and have used many phonics and spelling books and MCP is my favorite.

I’m a homeschooler. I ordered this workbook for my first grader. It is phonics based, has simple and direct lessons, and a veriety of activities. We are half way through the book and I’m very pleased with it. I have already ordered another copy for my younger son and the Level B for next year. I plot on using Spelling Workout for as long as the kids keep learning from it. It seems to work for us. It’s a very excellent book…certainly worth a try!

I started this book with my 4 1/2 year ancient last month (who we will start homeschooling in the fall). She has no problems doing the lessons, the only downside is that they seem a small too simple. We used “Teach your child to read in 100 simple lessons” about 6 months ago and maybe because of that she has an simpler time with the spelling workouts – I’m not sure. But, other than the fact that I don’t reckon it is aimed at a 1st grader, I really like the layout of the book. My daughter has fun with the activities and truly enjoys doing them; she doesn’t see it as “work” at all.

I have tried many different spelling curriculums over the years amongst my seven children. The Spelling Workout series captures their attention. It isn’t too long or too small. The words gradually increase in number throughout the lower elementary grades. It doesn’t overburdened the kids. They delight in the activities. It is parent friendly. Much of the work can be done independently if the child is a fluent reader. There is adequate reinforcement for learning the words in a reasonable amount of time.

I ordered this book as a recommendation from A Well Trained Mind. We are using Phonics Pathways as our book to teach reading. I have found that the writing and spelling suggestions in Phonics Pathways are sufficient to build spelling skills and do not need this book in addition to teach spelling to my first grader.
