This is what I really want in a workout video: effective exercises, intense but realistic pacing, authoritative instruction, gorgeous music…
I haven’t been a ‘dancer’ since a childhood knee injury, but I can still use what this incredible workout offers. It’s not an simple program, but it is rewarding in ways far beyond the loss of pounds or inches. Following it carefully I have regained strength, grace and balance, better-looking legs, a straighter spine and a body that I really don’t mind showing off on the beach this year. And even better than that–I have successfully used the New York City Ballet Workout to relieve severe shoulder pain and to restore lost range of motion in my shoulders and arms.
I would recommend this video to anyone who has an understanding of the basic disciplines of ballet and wishes to explore them for health, beauty or just to strive for perfection. If you buy it, make sure to read all of the information that goes with it. The exercises are intended for all ages, but you must be smart about how you make demands of your body. Fortunately, as the workout progresses that point is often repeated in the rich, gorgeous voice of the instructor. There’s much to like in this program…delight in!
Excellent product but Vol 2 alone might be enough.

I’m 30, female, and have never had any ballet experience before.
I’ve been using other dancing DVD workouts for a few years, but they are quicker pace workout with pop music. Now I’m maintaining my target weight, and I was looking for DVD that would help me to build some muscle, better posture, and flexibility.
Overall, I like it. But I don’t reckon it’s necessary to have Vol. 1. When I read other people’s reviews before buy, I thought Vol. 2 would be more advanced different movements. But, they are nearly same. In Vol. 2, they improved some areas where I got frustrated in Vol. 1. For example, the pause between exercises is much shorter in Vol. 2. Vol. 2 gives you more detail instruction ahead. It also has audio glossary at the end, which help a person who doesn’t have ballet background like me. I like its voice, music, and artistic scenes in both volumes. It’s really relaxing.
I was a small bit disappointed that both DVDs have ancient style sit-up and push-up. My other DVDs try to avoid them and introduce different exercises for abs and arms.
Although I don’t have that much fun compared to other DVDs, I reckon I get the result I wanted. It strengthens my muscle around my legs, abs, hip, and arms. I believe it’s excellent to be one of my routine DVDs. If it’s Vol. 2 alone, I would give 4 stars.
not as hard a workout as expected
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I was hoping for something more intense and physically demanding. It was a decent workout but since i’ve been in ballet for many years i will look for a dvd that duplicates classwork step by step. this was a cardio workout with ballet influence…not enough for me.
LOVE LOVE LOVE

Being an exballet dancer my body just thanks me everytime i do this workout. Its so wonderful. And anyone can do it.
Fantastic DVD workout
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have recently started taking ballet classes and this video complements them perfectly. It’s fantastic because I can choose which areas I want to workout as a complement to a class or simply do the whole program (which is quite demanding). I really like it. The only problem I find is that the explanations to the workout sometimes are not in sync with what the dancers are doing. I simply ignore the voice over and try to do what the dancers do.
fantastic workout/dance routines

Fantastic for my break from school.
Keeps me training in dance moves and keeps me flexible.
Fantastic Ballet Workout!!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Bravo!!!! This 2-DVD set is outstanding!!! The user will be taken slowly through many wonderful strengthening exercises while developing poise and grace. Dancers from the New York City Ballet demonstrate each exercise carefully. Peter Martins, the director of NYCB and the DVDs’ narrator, meticulously clarifies each exercise being performed, and he emphasizes moving at your own pace. He also reminds the user to breathe regularly. These Ballet exercises do not require a Barre to stretch on–Floor barre exercises are utilized here. The exercises have proven safe and effective. This user has noticed for herself a significant improvement in body strength, muscle tone, grace and poise in the small time she has used them. In addition, the exercises are accompanied by gorgeous relaxing classical music. In every exercise you will see all aspects of the dancers’ movements–very critical for proper learning and safe performance. A Must-Buy for Ballet students!!!!
Gift

This was a Christmas Gift. The receiver really likes it. It is not to hard. Sometimes it goes rather quick but it is a DVD so you can start over anytime you want. The receiver believes with repetition she will get quicker and will be able to keep up.
This video is a downer for my day…
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I generally wake up at 4:30 in the morning to exercise. When I bought this video it was such a dissapointment! The workouts themselves were fine. It reminded me of ballet class. The transitions between each sequence were frusterating. They didn’t flow. The lighting was dark and depressing. If they expected me to end the whole video, then it should have been cheerier. Instead I was in a sour mood for the rest of the day.
My favourite ballet workout DVD!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought three ballet DVDs and this one is undoubtedly my favourite. It provides a excellent physical workout and at the same time makes me feel like a dancer! The exercises are accessible to people of all different levels of fitness and dance experience. Compared to the other ballet workout DVD I bought, the NYC ballet DVDs feel less like an aerobics class, are not as repetitive and place emphasis on enjoying the experience of dancing, rather than on reducing stout or burning calories. The DVD allows you to make up your own workout from the different chapters and also to choose between a classical music soundtrack and a contemporary music soundtrack. Doing the workout, it feels so excellent to be in my body and afterwards I am left feeling strong and graceful, like a dancer. I highly recommend these DVDs.
Need to be experienced with pilates or ballet
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I was so excited about this workout, based on other’s reviews. I was disapointed when I watched it. Here’s why:
1. Hardly anything is clarified. You are expected to watch the dancers and figure it out. If you are familiar with ballet, you could probably do it. I have no experience with ballet except watching a few of my daughter’s classes at the YMCA, so after 2 weeks, I am still struggling to do some of the warm-up moves. The only reason I have been able to do any of the exercises is because I have been doing pilates workouts for years, and there are many similar exercises to pilates.
2. this is not a weightloss workout. it is for toning, grace, and strength, so don’t expect different.
3. You have to watch a several minute long intro by Sarah Jessica Parker every time you do the workout.
All in all, it is an okay workout, and I hope it helps my posture improve, like it says it will. Do Not get this workout if you have never done ballet or pilates. There is not enough instruction to keep you from hurting yourself. Choose Windsor Pilates instead.Winsor Pilates Basic 3 DVD Workout Set Total Body Sculpting {Basics Step-By-Step, 20 Minute Workout, Accelerated Body Sculpting}
Nice workout
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
This video was nice and simple for someone with dance background. It wasn’t challenging for me but still nice workout for anyone looking for the basics to ballet.
Horrible DVD interface and choppy work-out
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
After the poor experience with disc 1, I may or may not attempt disc 2. So, this is a review of disc 1 only…
The interface for the DVD itself is really terrible. You cannot skip from one work-out section to the next (using previous/next). There is a glitch whereby you cannot return to the DVD menu without stopping the work-out entirely. At one point it becomes an endless loop where you can’t exit a menu for the dancers’ diaries (at no point had I really navigated to the diaries). The scene selections on the main DVD menu are non-descriptive and do not have a visual preview. Plus, you can only play the single scene you’ve selected — you can’t start the work-out from that scene. So, the only way to navigate the work-out is by way of quick-forward.
On top of this, every few minutes the work-out is interrupted by lengthy outros/intros that ruin the flow of the exercises. (And because of the navigation problems, you can’t avoid them.) The voice-over is muffled, often lags behind the moves on screen, and is slightly creepy. The dancers are gorgeous and the work-out appears to be effective, but the bungled technical execution makes the DVD nearly unusable.
Like I’m back in my ancient studio…
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I danced for 16 years when I was younger; 10 of those years were devoted to ballet. I’ve long been trying to find a way to get back into dancing, without taking classes that would push me to the professional arena. So far, this workout video is the closest I’ve come to feeling like I’m back in a studio class.
A few observations for right beginners:
1. The introduction on DVD #2 should have been placed at the beginning of DVD #1. It gives basic terminology descriptions, as well as instruction on stance and carriage. This information is really vital for not being in pain throughout the whole workout.
2. Despite the fact that they give you a warm-up, you should do some minor stretching before you start. Or, skip to the plie section and repeat it a couple of times before going back to the very first section or moving forward. This will help loosen your muscles so you don’t cramp up along the way.
3. Make sure you have plenty of space. You don’t really need a barre, as most of the stuff on both DVDs is open floor exercise. But, I found myself having to shift mid-step a few times because they do have you moving around quite a bit and I was bumping into things.
This is a fantastic workout program and the ONLY video program I’ve done where I haven’t been in horrible pain the next day. The abs exercises, especially, are WONDERFUL. After only two days I can already feel a difference and I certainly plot to keep at it until I see that difference as well!
Too hard!
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I have some ballet experience from when i took classes as a kid, but i still find this DVD somewhat hard to follow. It’s also kind of slow. I would rather take classes live, as this was just too dull to last through the entire thing.
