Atkins Diet Quick Hits – How long to do Induction?

I produced another Atkins Diet Quick Hits videos. In this one, I deal with question of how long to stay on Induction and what the warning signs to progress to the Ongoing Weight Loss Phase. I normally get this question from those with lots to lose or those people who become carb phobic. My response normally goes – you can stay on Induction for a really long time, but you should progress to OWL when you hit one of the warning conditions. Here are the warning signs: 1. poor exercise performance, prolonged fatigue, or tiredness 2. Blood work comes back out of whack – One of mine came back borderline for globulin, the doc recommended I start eating nuts. I had it rechecked shortly thereafter, and it was fine. 3. Boredom with the food choices. For additional information: www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com

@SeattleLumbeeGirl The excellent news is you know why it happened, and how to prevent it in the future. I would say but you would want to do 14 days clean first before progressing OWL. It lets you know you can indeed control your eating and what enters your mouth.

I cheated during induction! Was stuck in an airport for 12 hours and didn’t plot properly. Do I need to start over?

I have been following a STRICT induction for 8 weeks. I weighed 298 when I started (female) and in the first 6 weeks I lost a total of 30 lbs. I have not been able to budge that scale at all in the past 2 weeks! I’m eating at MOST 1,500
calories per day…some days only 800. Do you reckon my small stall could mean it’s time to go on to OWL? I’m having a really hard time finding induction foods that are high in calories. Any suggestions?

If you are in Induction, you should not be having any shakes. (Atkins ones are debatable, but I fall on the no side.) During the OWL phase you can add them back into your diet, but real food should be the imperative. The protein you’d find in a shake can certainly be found in real food (eggs, meat, etc) as well.

Thank you for the support you are very knowledgable in the atkins ways Been on induction for 30 days and 16lbs gone I am also weight training as I have been for a while before what should u use for a shake afterworkouts while in induction besides the atkins shakes

On Induction, I would be concerned about them, but on OWL I would not have any problem.

what about acai berry pills are those excellent to take while on this eating lifestyle..

I would experiment with different vegetables — like only peppers or mushrooms for a few days and excluding the higher carb vegetables like onions / tomatoes from the experiment. It is less advisable to start adding more dairy as that has been more problematic generally than vegetables.

it’s my third week on Induction already. Weight loss is painfully slow even thought I have a proper cardio + light weight workout 4-5 times a week. I was wondering can I replace 3 cups of vegetables with more cheese and cream? I find that having just 3 cups of veggies a day does not do anyting for me. I much rather have more that 3 table spoons of cream and more cheese everyday… or would it slow the whole thing down?

Thank you for your answer and all the time you place into this.

  11. bowulf says:

Usually if you question for a annual physical blood workand urinalysis, they’ll get everything they need. Things you should be looking for are obviously lipids panel (cholesterol), globulin – liver, BUN – kidney, blood glucose levels after fasting, A1C-diabetes, etc. They are certainly others, but those are the majors I can remember from mine in Jan.

  12. nixter0 says:

Please forgive my ignorance, but how would I check my blood chemistry? What questions would I question my dr?

  13. bowulf says:

Not unless you were at goal, and even then you should complete the entire Induction period.

  18. bowulf says:

Google “Atkins Induction Acceptable Foods List.”

    Oils are all allowed.

Heavy Cream is allowed, milk is not.

  19. Daisyacero says:

  20. bowulf says:

Not really.. If people follow the videos to my website or click the ads, there are a few dollars in my Google ads account, but mostly it is just trying to encourage others achieve the same success.

    Hi bowulf,

do you really earn some kind of money with your low carb videos etc? I mean the videos and the emails probably need a lot of time to make/ answer.

    Thanks anyway!

  22. bowulf says:

Yep, that’s part of knowing you are in ketosis. It should go away in within a few days.

  23. 2heawy says:

    New start =)

  24. 2heawy says:

Ok Thanks for your help, dont have the book but Im gonna watch your videos and try to do a new star, bye the way my mouth smells like **** is that normal?

  25. bowulf says:

If you can’t read the book, watch my Induction videos or search Atkins Induction Acceptable Foods and Rules, and you should get an understanding of what you should be eating. There are so many misconceptions of what is Atkins, so it’s not uncommon for these mistakes.
