Atkins Diet Misconceptions: Low Carb Failure Rates Far Exceeds Others?

This video is a reaction to a critic who claimed that low carb failures “FAR exceeds” those attempting low stout or moderation diet. Coincidentally at the same time I learned a meta-analysis study of the major randomized trials of low carb at that point. In the end but, it only matters…

@TreachMarkets Yep, playing within the limits makes absolute sense. Going off the deep end (eating a whole deep dish pizza) is only thing I caution against. What you are saying is like having hard and simple days in running to stay at the top of your game.
I’m down 53 lbs. I do mix it up a small. When I plateau, I go up or down a small, from <10g/day, up to about 40. Throw your metabolism a curveball occasionally, while still staying in the ballpark.
@jorgepnm5307 “that means weight lifting and doing at least 30 minutes of cardio.” That is NOT practical for a lot of folks out there.
I reckon you fail to know that Atkins is indeed a lifelong journey or lifestyle change for most successful Atkins followers.
“moderate healthy balanced meals” — by whose definition? I reckon my meals are very moderate and very healthy balanced meals. My ratios are just different than what you reckon they should be, but the results are certainly in the last 6 years.
I couldn’t be healthier, perform better, or have better annual physicals and blood analysis since changing the way I eat.
So by not being in favor of any diets, you aren’t in favor of any “way of eating” as Merriam Webster defines diet.
There are no “essential” carbohydrates that you have to eat as opposed to the essential fats and amino acids, which the body requires and can not make for itself. The body simply requires energy, and it can find that energy in a variety of different forms like stout and protein.
Your and others’ misunderstanding of the word “diet” doesn’t preclude its use.
there is no magical way to losing weight, it only takes moderate healthy balanced meals and exercising every day. that means weight lifting and doing at least 30 minutes of cardio. I am not in favour of any diets, specially the atkins, because the human body needs their carbohydrates to function properly.people shouldn’t diet, because diets implies that the person will return to their ancient habits, people just need a lifestyle change, something that they can do for the rest of their life.
Thank you. Your channel is incredible i have been on the diet for two and a half months and have los 50 pounds. i have another 50 to go still to reach goal but if you did it so can i thank you for being such a fantastic inspiration to us all.
I deal with the subject of protein in my High stout vs. high protein video. Atkins is a high stout diet. Making it a high protein video is generally counter-productive as excess protein is converted to glucose by the liver.
How much protein should you have daily? if you increase protein intake will you loose weight quicker? i.e. taking powder protein with breakfast making your body go after the stout and not the muscle is this assumption right?
You are very welcome. I agree knowing the science behind everything simply solidifies everything. Congrats on your progress so far!
Thanks for all the information. I finally read the Atkins book for the first time. It was so helpful for me to know what exactly happens when you eat carbs. The body is an incredible thing. It makes so much sense that our bodies really don’t know how to handle all the chemicals found in most man made carb foods. I have been on Atkins now for a month I have lost 6 lbs .I even talked my husband into doing it. Thanks for all the info and recipes.
What a fantastic change in only a few days… It is incredible what can happen once the body gets back into osmotic balance.
After only 5 days of being on Atkins, my blood pressure went from an average of 145/112 to 140/82!! I am on day 12 right now, but that was just in the first week! I am SO sold out on this! I like it! And your recipes are awesome!!
I would caution changing or tweaking too soon. My Post Induction Stall Syndrome video deals with this 2.5-3 weeks weight loss slow down. Just don’t over reckon this period, but whatever you do, excellent luck!
I hope you meet your goal!
I’ve lost 19 pounds already since a week before 02/15/10 and I feel fantastic! I am on a stall right now but I’m going to tweak my diet a small and start dropping some more!! My goal is to lose 55 by my birthday 01/10 wish my luck!!
Have you seen my potassium – hypokalemia video?
I have been doing atkins diet for a while now and keep getting hypotension (dizzy on standing). I know others on the diet have very low blood pressures, and I have noticed I am finding it hard to get the magnesium, calcium and potassium I need to meet the RDA. I do not feel well supplementing potassium. What should I do?
I reckon you hit it probably right. People probably don’t know the diet in the first place. Do it their own way (zero carb/ zero vegetable/high SF candy), and then get eventually discouraged that they can’t eat the french fries.
Perhaps because it is so simple to say you are doing “low carb” or reckon you are “doing Atkins” without ever once reading the book, that they attribute the failure to the genre of the diet, but that they didn’t follow the rules never occurs.
I have been on Atkins several months now and my only complaint is that I am having to buy new clothes already. And I have never stepped on a scale. Also I take dvantage of all the awesome LC recipes on the internet. No bunless burgers or baked chicken breasts with lettuce for me. Don’t let your program get dull!! Dr. Atkins once said you can eat like a king if you only keep your carbohydrates low. I take advantage of that , even on 25 grams a day!
I feel that LC plans like Atkins do have a rather large failure rate – but it is not because the diet doesn’t work, it’s because many people abandon the diet. I reckon the #1 reason for this, is because people get too restrictive and thus get bored with it. People also become addicts to the scale. You are doomed to fail if you expect the first 2 weeks of rapid weight loss to follow throughout your time on Atkins. You must get the sense this is a lifestyle change, not just a diet.
I hear that… The excellent news the amount of work is remarkably low enough for someone even like myself to do it.
We aren’t define by what we do only one day. We are defined by how committed we are every day. Nice job in bouncing back, and putting yourself back on the route for success.
Check out my dining out options video if you need more suggestions when and if you want to eat out.
Isn’t fantastic that you will be set up for long term success?
Completely agree… It is just how I eat now.
i reckon low carb only gets hard when i feel too bone idle to make my own meals—when i just want to grab whatevers on hand.. so i usually try and cook up different things on sundays to be prepared for the week… carbs go down simple and land squarely on my behind and inflate my tummy — that insulin thing you know… but i like what low carb is doing for me..i just got to work it
