Product Description
The twin epidemics of obesity and diabetes are a 21st-century time bomb. The Atkins organisation is renowned for their work on diabetes and this book sets out a controlled carb diet and nutrition regime to help people lose weight and prevent, treat and even reverse diabetes. The conventional ‘healthy’ Western diet, based upon large amounts of carbohydrates and a small amount of protein and stout, results for many people in a state of hyperinsulinism, a key factor in … More >>
Atkins Diabetes Revolution: Control Your Carbs to Prevent and Manage Type 2 Diabetes

This book, like the Atkins approach in general, has part of the picture, but is certainly incomplete. Moderation, not virtual elimination, of carbohydrates, when paired with lean protein, plenty of omega 3 (fish and flax oils), and monounsaturated oils (like olive oil), has been shown to be the healthiest diet (a Mediterranian type diet). The Atkins approach does not advocate moderation, instead prefering to vilify an entire necessary macronutrient – carbohydrates! Certainly the ancient fashioned 1980′s style high carb low stout diets were a disaster, and brought out diabetes in susceptible people – but the answer is balance – excellent quality, naturally high fiber carbs, paired with protein and healthy stout – not virtual elimination of carbs. Inadequate carbohydrate intake can lead to fatigue and reluctance to exercise. Dr. Vernon herself continues to struggle with her weight, despite following the Atkins approach. Most Americans will initially lose weight when starting on Atkins because most eat FAR too many carbs. But they also eat too much saturated stout (animal and dairy stout, for the most part), which has been show to worsen insulin problems and diabetes, and aggravate cholesterol and artery inflammation, worsening risk of heart disease and stroke. Atkins addresses one of the these culprits (excess sugar), but not the other (excess saturated stout). Americans need to cut down on these, and then add more excellent fats (fish, nuts, olive oil, avacado), lean protein (to cut down on saturated stout), and not be worried of healthy carbs in the form of whole fruits (not juice), vegetables, and whole grains (not white bread or sugary low fiber cereal). That, plus watching the calories, and daily exercise (at least 30 ” of moderate cardio, five days a week), and diabetes will DRAMATICALLY improve. Try it and see! Health is not just about weight – its about healthy body stout and muscle ratios, and what is going on inside your body – in your arteries, your brain, etc. The studies all support healthy balance.

…to dieting and to writing. As a previous reviewer alluded to, this book would have been much better had Dr. Atkins been able to end himself. But, what we are left with is a co-author MD who’s personality is as cold as ice; not to mention condescending and disrespectful. This shines through in the tone of the writing. Furthermore, how can we take diet advice from someone who is obese herself? There are plenty of other well-written low-carb diet books. Try another.

As with Atkins’ other books, this book is not only worthless, but could be downright perilous for anyone treating diabetes. Mary Vernon, who fashioned herself as Atkins’ protegee, has absolutely no knowledge of real nutrition, but is herself OBESE. Who is she? The President (or former president) of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians!
Tells you something about that organization.
Atkins’ and Vernon’s? advocacy of using ketosis to treat even children with diabetes is truly “malpractice!” If this book were free and postage paid, it still be worth ZERO!

The first set that I got from Amazon had major production problems with the third CD and it couldn’t be played. Amazon replaced the set and the replacement set didn’t have problems — they could all play. My complaint is not with Amazon.
On a more serious basis, the audio cds refer to things that are not in place. They refer to a hard-copy list of high glycemic fruits and vegetables that was supposed to be included. This hard-copy list was not included with either set that I received (in case they just screwed up on one). Even more fascinating, in the audio it refers to the fact that additional information is supposed to be available through the Atkins web site, lists an address (http://www.atkins.com/agr) — and that’s not a valid page. You get the dreaded error message 404 page.
I sent email to the Atkins’ site and got no response. This could be solved by adding the page mentioned in the cds — and adding the information that’s supposed to be included on a card.
Right now, some of the key information that you need to make this diet work is not available. You would still need to go buy the book to get that information.
I am a fan of the Atkins diet and had hoped that this cd set would be helpful for a friend with diabetes. It is not.
I would not recommend this cd set. If you care about the information, then buy the book.
It is my understanding that this cd was produced by a different company than the people who produced their other CD set. I’m sorry they didn’t do a better quality control.
